At one time or another we all have laptop envy.  You know you have experienced this sometime in your past maybe you were sitting in a coffee shop or at the park and someone pulled out a shiny computer to look at while you are sitting there with a paperback book or heaven forbid — nothing.  Your mind starts to wander to everything you could do if only you had a laptop computer of your own.  You could check your email, you could chat with your friends, you could write the next great American novel in the park.  Turn your laptop envy around and think of all the good reasons for owing a desktop computer instead.

• Reason 1 to own a desktop computer: save yourself money.  It is not secret that desktop computers cost much less than a similar laptop computer.  If you are looking to save money, a desktop is the way to go.  Sure you will be spending money on monitors, speakers, keyboards, mice and more but you can also replace this items as needed without having to purchase an entirely new computer.

• Reason 2 to own a desktop computer: easy upgrades.  If you find yourself filing up your hard drive with photos and videos, it is much easier to upgrade your desktop computer than a notebook computer.  In less than 15 minutes you can upgrade many components inside your desktop and it will seem like you have an entirely new computer. 

• Reason 3 to own a desktop computer: games.  Most laptop computers have to use a smaller and less powerful components in order to fit in the limited space available.  Many of todays computer games are not only fun to play but visual masterpieces as well.  In order to play these games as designed, the hardware requirements are high and laptop components simply do not have the power you need.  If you are willing to play your latest game on the lame setting of “simple graphics,” choose a laptop.  If you want to really learn to fly, choose a desktop.

• Reason 4 to own a desktop computer: leave your work and the internet.  I know this is a very difficult idea for many people but sometimes you really need to step away from the computer and check on the outside world.  Your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, or significant others will love being able to spend a little bit of time with your without having to compete with the computer for attention.  A desktop computer makes it very easy to disconnect, a laptop computer will follow you everywhere.

• Reason 5 to own a desktop computer: Build Your Own.  Again, no secret that building a desktop computer or upgrading a preexisting computer is much easier when you are working on a desktop computer.  Laptop computers are a very delicate and intricate engineering process.  Components are much smaller and may be layered upon each other in a very delicate process.  Misinstall one item or fail to seat something correctly and not only will the entire computer fail to work, but you probably will not be able to get the case together.

The choice between desktop and laptop computers is a choice that everyone is required to make at some point in their life, may you choose wisely.
